Overgrips

 Overgrip Information

If you are a serious tennis player, you should consider using an overgrip and replacing it every 2 or 3 matches. Overgrips will reduce "slippage" and the associated unforced errors that come with it.  Overgrips will protect your original racquet grip.

Manufacturers emphasize a specific "feel" characteristic when designing overgrips. These are:

  • Feel
  • Absorbtion
  • Tackyness
  • Softness

"Feel" typically applies to very thin overgrips, minimizing any feeling that you even have one on.

A focus on "absorption" means the overgrip is designed to maintain a "dry feeling".

A focus on tack means the overgrip is designed to provide sticky feeling or relatively high friction to prevent movement in your hand.  Players who switch grips alot (e.g. those who have different grips between strokes such as forehand to backhand to slice to serve) will probably not like the "super tacky" grips, but regular "tack" is hardly "sticky" and is popular.

A focus on "soft" overgrip is appealing to those who have wrist injuries or pain from arthritis or other joint injuries.

  • Overgrips are placed ontop of your replacement grips and are used to help maintain the feel of a new grip without the cost of a Replacement Grip.  Overgrips are designed to be either tacky or absorbant.  Tacky grips allow for a no slip hold onto your frame, while absorbant grips focus on absorbing your perspiration and keeping the handle dry.

Overgrips and replacement grips generally come in 4 textures:

  • SMOOTH: No ridges or holes or treads, providing the best "feel" but without much cushioning. This is the grip most used by serious players.
  • RIBBED: This grip has ridges and may be preferred by those with arthritis or wrist injuries.
  • EMBOSSED: This has a tire tread like pattern, moving moisture away from your hand.
  • PERFORATED: Pinholes help increase absorption from very sweaty hand to absorbent material under the surface.
